The IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society focuses on the intersection of
humans, technology, and intelligent systems. Its research areas include:

Robotics and autonomous systems

This is the society for engineers and researchers building technology that
thinks, adapts, and works alongside humans. That's exactly the space I operate in.

What is IEEE MTT-S?

The IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society known as MTT-S - is one of
IEEE's most globally recognized technical societies. It covers the full spectrum
from microwave to millimeter-wave and terahertz technologies, connecting innovators
working on everything from wireless communications to advanced sensing systems.

Their tagline says it well: "in the company of innovators worldwide."

Being recognized as a Student Member in good standing means I'm formally part
of that global community alongside researchers, engineers, and technologists
pushing the boundaries of what's possible.

Why This Matters to Me as a Software Engineer

You might wonder what does a Full-Stack and AI/ML Engineer have to do with
microwave and RF technology?

More than you'd think.

The systems I build real-time communication platforms, IoT-adjacent apps,
AI-powered mobile applications all depend on the underlying hardware and
wireless infrastructure that societies like MTT-S help advance.

Understanding the full stack doesn't stop at software. The best engineers
understand the layers beneath their code too.

Beyond that, being part of IEEE's technical societies keeps me connected to
cutting-edge research, global standards, and a network of serious engineers
across every discipline.

I Served as IEEE Vice Chair at ESUT - Here's What That Journey Taught Me

My name is Samson Ezugwu, a Full-Stack Developer and AI/ML Engineer based in
Enugu, Nigeria, and the founder of SonicPrime Dev.

From January 2025 to December 2026, I served as the IEEE Vice Chair for the
Enugu State University of Science & Technology student branch, SSC37.

Looking back, this role shaped me in ways I didn't fully anticipate when I took it on.

What the Vice Chair Role Actually Is

The Vice Chair sits directly behind the Chair in branch leadership. In practice,
that means stepping in whenever the Chair is unavailable, co-driving the vision
for the branch, and making sure the leadership team is aligned and moving forward.

It's a role that demands both technical credibility and people skills which,
honestly, is the best combination a developer can develop.

What I Learned Leading a Technical Community

1. Leadership is mostly listening.

The best decisions I made as Vice Chair came from understanding what members
actually needed not what I assumed they needed. That same principle now guides
how I scope projects at SonicPrime Dev.

2. Showing up consistently matters more than big gestures.

Communities don't grow from one great event. They grow from consistent,
reliable presence over time. Small actions compound.

3. Technical skills open the door. Soft skills keep you in the room.

I can build full-stack apps, train ML models, and ship mobile applications.
But it was communication, organization, and follow-through that made me
effective in this role and in client relationships.

Why I Keep Saying Yes to IEEE Roles

By the time this post goes live, I Samson am also serving as Secretary
and Webmaster for the ESUT IEEE branch in 2026-2027.

That's three IEEE volunteer roles across two years.

People ask me why I take on so much. The answer is simple: I believe in
what IEEE represents for Nigerian students. Access to a global network,
professional credibility, and a community of people who take engineering seriously.

If I can help strengthen that at ESUT, it's worth my time.

To Anyone Considering a Leadership Role in Their Student Branch

Take it. Seriously.

You will get uncomfortable. You will have to manage people, navigate disagreements,
and deliver results without a salary. And you will come out the other side a
significantly better professional.

The best engineers I know aren't just technically strong - they know how to
lead, communicate, and build trust. IEEE volunteer roles are one of the best
places to develop all three.

I'm Now the IEEE Secretary at Enugu State University of Science & Technology

I'm happy to share that I've been recognized as the IEEE Secretary for the
Enugu State University of Science & Technology student branch a volunteer role
running from January 2026 through December 2027.

This is actually my second IEEE volunteer role at ESUT. I also serve as the
branch Webmaster, which means I'm both keeping records and building the
digital presence of the branch. Two roles, one mission.

What the Secretary Role Involves

As Secretary, I'm responsible for the administrative backbone of the branch
meeting records, correspondence, member coordination, and making sure the branch
runs with structure and accountability.

It's not the most glamorous role on paper, but I've come to appreciate it deeply.
A community without structure doesn't scale. And if we want ESUT's IEEE branch
to be taken seriously locally and globally it has to operate like a serious organization.

Why I Volunteered for Two Roles

Honestly? Because I saw gaps and I had the capacity to fill them.

As a developer, I'm wired to fix broken systems. When I looked at what the branch
needed a better web presence, better documentation, better organization I didn't
wait for someone else to step up.

That's the same energy I bring to every project I build at
SonicPrime Dev.
Identify the problem. Build the solution. Ship it.

What I Hope to Contribute

Over the next two years, I want to help build an IEEE student branch that:

Runs events that actually move the needle for students' careers
Documents its work properly so future members have a foundation to build on
Has a web presence that reflects the quality of its members
Becomes a model for other student branches in South-East Nigeria

Enugu State University of Science & Technology student branch — a volunteer role

This means a lot to me, not just as a title, but as a responsibility.

What This Role Actually Means

IEEE is one of the largest and most respected professional organizations for
engineers and technologists in the world. Having a student branch at ESUT is
a big deal for the South-East Nigeria tech community — and the Webmaster role
puts me at the intersection of technology and community building.

My job is to make sure the branch has a strong, functional, and professional
web presence — one that represents the quality of the engineers and developers
coming out of this institution.

Why I Take This Seriously

I've been building software professionally for a while now — full-stack web apps,
mobile apps, AI-powered systems. But one thing I've always believed is that
individual growth means nothing if your community doesn't grow with you.

Enugu has talent. Nigeria has talent. What we sometimes lack is visibility,
structure, and the right platforms to showcase that talent to the world.

This role is my chance to contribute to fixing that — starting with something
I know how to do well: building good software.
